Woodkirk too good for Thornes

4th February 2018 – Thornes vs Woodkirk Valley U14’s

Woodkirk welcomed Curley back into the squad today but were rocked just before kick off with the news that Farahn was ill and would not be fit for the game.  With only 12 available for selection it meant a rejig at the back with Louie playing in an unfamiliar role but the manager had faith that the players were able to cope.

In the early stages of the game Woodkirk and in particular Brad, stamped their authority on the game.  When Brads on form he is unplayable and on 5th minute after picking the ball up on the halfway line and beating 3 players, he played a low cross into Kofi for an easy tap in.  0-1 Woodkirk.

Woodkirk had their tails up and at such an early stage of the game, they knew they had the beating of Thornes. Fyn, Harrison and Harry were bossing midfield with the defence, ably martialled by Ben, nullifying the Thornes attacked easily.  On 9 mins Fyn made a trademark burst forward beating 2 players before unleashing an effort towards goal which hit the post and fell kindly for Brad to calmly finish. 0-2 Woodkirk.

A period of dominance followed with Woodkirk enjoying field advantage and practically camping in the Thornes half.  However, with JP being a virtual spectator in the Woodkirk goal a speculative Thornes effort from 35 yards was parried and with no Woodkirk defenders rushing back to help their keeper Thornes scored an undeserved goal. The manager didn’t have to say anything to the Woodkirk players, they knew they had switched off. 1-2 Woodkirk.

After the Thornes goal Woodkirk re-established their dominance on the game and after wining a battle in midfield Harrison played a fine through ball to Brad who finished superbly on 22 mins.  Woodkirk kept pushing and on 28 mins a scamble inside the Thornes penalty area resulted in Sam poking the ball home from close range.

1-4 Woodkirk at HT.

The only danger for Woodkirk was complacency as the opposition and game as a whole was not a sufficient challenge.  Woodkirk played some fine football in the second period and scored a further 5 goals with Thornes scoring 1 in reply.  Harry scored 2, Brad grabbed his hat-trick, Kofi bagged his second and Harrison scored the goal of the game with an inch perfect effort direct from a free kick.

2-9 Woodkirk at FT.

Thornes kept going to the final whistle but Woodkirk were in a different league and deserved at least the 6 goal margin of victory.

JP was a virtual spectator today and every other outfield player performed well in attack today.  Brad was a constant threat and as always, Fyn made a huge difference.  Today’s MoM went to Harrison for a fine performance in midfield and a great free kick goal.
