Wolves see off the Bantams

Saturday 13th October saw Woodkirk U16s play in the first round of the cup against Bradford City Girls.

Bradford who have had a good start to the season would be a stern test for the girls following on from the strong display against Worksop Town.  Unfortunately Bradford had a number of injuries from a squad of 15 with 2 girls picking up the sickness bug the night before the game.  Bradford were only able to bring 10 players. Despite this the game was evenly balanced for the first 20 mins. Woodkirk enjoyed the majority of possession and territory but Bradford looked dangerous on the break.  The quick feet and movement of Mia upfront caused Bradford so many problems. Errin and Ava controlled the centre of midfield not allowing Bradford to get out easily.  Woodkirk opened the scoring, however a moments later a lapse in concentration and indecision allowed Bradfords strong and quick striker to break clear and finish well 1-1. 15 minutes before the break Woodkirk scored again, but again Woodkirk relaxed and the Bradford striker pounced on the indecision and went through to score again 2-2. The pace of the game and the pressure applied by Woodkirk with strong running from Amelia and Aimee out wide forced Bradford deeper and deeper 2 goals just before half time helped ease the team going into the second half.  4-2

Woodkirk started slowly in the second half and the break helped Bradford recover, however with Woodkirk able to bring on Karolina and rotate players, tiredness and the trickery of Millie and Mia up front gaps began to appear and the goals began to flow with 2 goals from Aimee against her old team 1 from Ava and hat tricks for Mia and Millie completed the Woodkirk scoring, A well deserved 3rd for the Bradford striker completed her hat trick only some fine saves from Ella and strong defending from Jess, Naomi and Mackenzie and Molly prevented her from more goals.

The final score was 9-3 to Woodkirk safely through to the second round of the cup.

Well done to the Bradford Girls for keeping going to the end.
