First Win of 2018 for U14’s

14th January 2018 – Sherburn White Rose vs Woodkirk Valley FC

It was a case of spot the blade of grass as a cold morning and an awful pitch greeted Woodkirk for their first game of 2018.  Woodkirk were pleased to welcome back Captain Sam after a spell on the sidelines recovering from a broken collar bone.  Sam had been chomping at the bit to get involved but postponed fixtures due to unplayable pitches pre Christmas meant he had to wait until today to get his boots dirty.

Woodkirk started well and dominated field position but a poor pitch proved difficult for both teams to pass the ball and play football.  For all of Woodkirk’s possession they were unable to test the Sherburn goalkeeper but on 21 mins that was to change.  A fine ball from Louie in central midfield found Kofi on the right who crossed in to Sam on the penalty spot.  Sam cushioned the ball into the path of Brad who struck a first time effort past the Sherbun keeper. 0-1 Woodkirk.

After the break the game continued in the same vain with Woodkirk having most of the ball without really testing the opposition keeper.  Woodkirk were comfortable at the back and the feeling on the touchline was that whatever questions Sherbun were asking, Woodkirk defensively had the answers.  However, with a one goal advantage the game and result is never certain but on 63 mins Wodkirk were gifted penalty (not sure whether it was a foul or hand ball) which was emphatically dispatched by Louie for this first goal for the club. 0-2 Woodkirk.

In difficult conditions both teams tried to play football as best they could.  Woodkirk had a number of stand out performers but todays MoM went to Louie who did exceptionally well in midfield winning most of his one on ones and scoring his first goal for the club.  All the lads send their best wishes to Dermot who was taken ill part way through the first half and had to go home – get well soon Dermot and we hope the 3 points helps with your recovery.
