A 2:00pm KO for our U15’s away to Sherburn White Rose saw them secure their first win and maintain their unbeaten start to the new season. On arriving the lads were pleased to see some grass on the field after last season’s visit to a mud bath. However, during the warm up it was clear that the pitch was very firm and with the slope and wind, passing accuracy and delivery would be key.
After a strong start in which Woodkirk dominated field advantage and possession whilst playing into the wind, they failed to make the early breakthrough that was perhaps deserved. Sherburn will point to the fact that they reduced Woodkirk to very few clear cut chances and with this their confidence grew. On 34 minutes however, the deadlock was broken as Brad scored his first of the season – a freekick from Fyn was flicked on in the area by Ben who had been sent forward to ’cause a few problems’. Ben did his job to perfection and Brad was left to put the ball in the net – not the prettiest of goals but a goal non the less. 0-1 Woodkirk on 34 mins.
0-1 Woodkirk at HT.
It seemed that the lessons from last Sunday had not been learned as immediately after the restart Woodkirk were back to level terms. Following a defensive mix up an open goal was presented to the Sherburn player for him to execute the simplest of finishes. 1-1 on 41 mins.
The Woodkirk players are still adjusting to the teams new formation and the responsibilities for each position but when focused they play some lovely football. On 54 minutes Tony stepped out from the defensive line like Harry Maguire in World Cup mode and played a pinpoint through ball to Tulips who nonchalantly lobbed the ball over the onrushing keeper and into the net. Tulips third goal in two games. 1-2 Woodkirk on 54 mins.
On 64 minutes Sherburn won a freekick on the edge of Woodkirk 18 yard box which was scored. 2-2 on 64 mins.
The 2-2 scoreline was not a true reflection on the game and Woodkirk pressed for the winner. The firmness of the pitch was beginning to frustrate the players with passes going astray and with chance after chance coming to nothing it seamed destined that another draw was on the cards. However, Tulips was becoming more influential in the game and it was his through ball that set Brad through to score the winning goal on 74 mins.
2-3 Woodkirk at FT.
Woodkirk take the 3 points and move on to Horsforth St Margarets Chargers next Sunday – hopefully with no defensive lapses to report.
MoM went to Fyn who controlled the game in midfield.
