Woodkirk Valley v Wortley Juniors - 9th December
GJFL Challenge Cup Quarter Final
Woodkirk Valley Wolves 3    Wortley Juniors 2

Woodkirk Valley Wolves U12’s still on the Prowl! Woodkirk Wolves U12’s saw off another top 1 st Division side to win through to the semi finals of the Challenge Cup on Sunday. The game was played in wet conditions and both teams had to adapt to some sticky conditions down the middle of the pitch. Woodkirk had a great chance on 15 mins as Philips put in a great cross from the left which bounced just in front Willerton and off his knee for a goal kick. Wortley found it difficult to penetrate the Woodkirk defence with Cowell, Tabor and McConnell restricting Wortley’s forward play. When they did break clear the pace of Hague to sweep up and the confident handling of Rhodes in goal frustrated the first division, but with 10 mins to go they eventually got through and scored to make it 1- 0 at half time. Woodkirk started the stronger in the 2 nd half with Wortley struggling to get out of their half. Midfielders Grayson and Metcalfe fed the wingers whilst Phillips and Spedding kept on the pressure. After 10 mins Woodkirk equalised with another fine cross from Philips met by Bradley who lobbed the ball over the defence and into the corner. On came Hurley to add pace out wide and Bagnall upfront in place of Bradley. The game finished 1-1 so that meant extra time. Woodkirk were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box and the strike from Philips cleared both wall and keeper, 2 –1 Woodkirk. Into the second period and with 5 minutes to go, a good move down the left saw the ball squared across the edge of the box to the oncoming “Scholes” Metcalfe who struck the ball sweetly into the bottom far corner, 3 – 1 Woodkirk. With only a minute to go Wortley scored a well deserved consolation goal in a game played in a good spirit by both teams. The Wolf pack go through to the Semi Final to take on top of the first division Farsley Celtic.
Man of the Match - Tabor

Menston Juniors v Woodkirk Valley - 14th October
GJFL Challenge Cup
Menston Hotshots 1     Woodkirk Valley Wolves 1 - (Woodkirk win 4-1 after penalties)

Wolves Bite Back!!!!! Woodkirk found themselves facing first division opposition in this Challenge Cup away to Menston Hotshots. With a new sponsorship deal with Hunslet based Union Industries -manufacturers of industrial doors and Eiger freezer doors coupled with somerecent signings Woodkirk have certainly found new steel. The game started with Menston applying early pressure and keeping the ball well. Wolves had three players taken ill on the morning of the game so had no subs and struggled to get to grips with the pace of the game. The home side scored after some sustained pressure with the Wolves unable to clear their lines and a fine strike from the edge of the area found its way through a crowd of players into the bottom corner. Menston continued to force the pace of the game but some solid defence from Tabor, Haque, Bagnall and Cowell meant it remained 1 – 0 at half time.  Woodkirk composed themselves at the restart and came out with more belief  which forced Menston onto the back foot with Hurley and Spedding using their pace outwide. With 10 minutes to go Woodkirk gained a free kick 20 yards out which Phillips struck a sweetly into the top corner giving the keeper no chance. 1 – 1 game on! Nothing could split the teams now despite Woodkirk playing the last few minutes down to 10 men as Cowell came off injured. Into extra time and there were chances at both ends but some fine keeping from Rhodes kept the score level. Willerton looked dangerous at the other end with Metclafe taking charge of the midfield and Bradley keeping the Menston defence on their toes.  Extra time could not separate the teams and so it was penalties. The 5 willing volunteers for the wolves included Phillips, Metcalfe, Cowell, Spedding & Willerton and they scored three out of three. Menston had two saved by Rhodes plus hit a third over the bar and the tie was over. A great game of football played in a great spirit by both teams.
Man of the Match - Haque in the centre of defence, but a great team performance, with everyone giving 100%
