Match 1: Bramley Phoenix 3 Woodkirk Valley 4
The final 2 games of the season, against the top of the division – if Valley manage at least one win and one draw we go 2nd in the division. If we only manage one win we are joint runners up.
Both the Valley players and supporters were on tenterhooks for this final meeting of the season as they looked to gain promotion to div 2. The match got underway in driving rain and Valley got just the start they wanted as Longhurst found the net from a corner kick. Good football from Proctor and Kendrew in midfield, with determined defending by Henshaw couldn’t prevent Bramley’s revenge and they leveled on 8 minutes. Further pressure from the hosts tested the defense of McGough and Callaghan and even a brave save attempt by Charlton in Valley goals couldn’t prevent them taking the lead for the only time in the game. Woodkirk were back on level terms before the break as a passing sequence from Callaghan, Humphrys and Proctor saw it scrambled home to make it 2-2.
The second half got underway and Kendrew tried a shot from the halfway line which just sailed over the crossbar. This was followed up by a second close effort as Humphrys drove forward to Longhurst whose shot was saved well by the Bramley keeper. Charlton was kept busy at the other end and Henshaw put his body between the ball and the netting to maintain parity. The game was now end to end stuff and both sides had chances until Valley gained the upper hand once more as Proctor scored from Longhurst’s corner kick.
Bramley equalized 3-3 in the 15th minute of the second half and the Valley supporters were beside themselves. Kendrew forced a corner, taken by Longhurst, passed to Proctor who placed the ball just over the Bramley netting. The final seconds produced a great ball from Callaghan, passed up field to Kendrew who blasted a shot from outside the box high to the corner of the Bramley goal. Clegg in Valley goals drove a huge kick down the pitch to Smallwood who passed to Laycock and moved into the Bramley goalmouth, as the Bramley keeper chased Laycock, he passed back to Smallwood who placed the ball in the Bramley open goals for his second of the match and a very important equalizer. Play continued with McKenna taking a header which covered his face in mud and Laycock also took a muddy shot in his eyes. McKenna and Rigby in defence produced some fine football to maintain the scoreline. Hurley and Laycock kept the ball forward with Turner trying a shot which just slid down the side of the Bramley goals. Clegg made a valiant save by leaping into the air and pushing the muddy ball over the crossbar with both hands, which he followed by blocking a further attempt with his whole body.
